At UYC, we believe therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Our clinicians have pursued training in a diverse range of evidence-based modalities to better support your healing journey. Please note that while our therapists are trained in these frameworks, every treatment plan is uniquely tailored to the individual client. Your therapist will collaborate with you to determine the best approach for your specific goals, often integrating tools from multiple modalities rather than relying on just one.

What is the ERP Framework?

Exposure and Response Prevention is an evidence-informed approach widely recognized as a primary behavioural framework for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and anxiety-related concerns.

The model is built on two core components:

  • Exposure: Gradually and safely leaning into situations, thoughts, or triggers that spark anxiety, uncertainty, or intrusive thoughts.

  • Response Prevention: Learning choices to delay, reduce, or resist performing compulsions, safety behaviours, or mental rituals.

By gradually confronting fears without relying on compulsions, the mind learns over time that anxiety can naturally ebb and flow without needing to perform a ritual to feel secure.

How Is It Used In Therapy?

An ERP-informed approach means integrating behavioural strategies alongside other established clinical frameworks (such as cognitive, acceptance-based, or compassionate approaches).

Therapy is always individualized, collaborative, and carefully paced. Your therapist will work alongside you to determine the best approach or blend of interventions for your specific comfort level and goals. ERP-informed strategies can be helpful for:

  • Understanding the cycle between intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and rituals (compulsions).

  • Building tolerance for uncertainty and anxiety in daily life.

  • Learning practical tools to resist automatic compulsive responses.

  • Reclaiming time, energy, and focus for activities aligned with your personal values.

Our Team & Approach

Integrative Practice: We draw from ERP strategies as conceptual tools within a broader therapeutic approach rather than offering certified, single-modality protocols.

Clinician Alignment: Select therapists on our team have a clinical interest in behavioural and exposure-based frameworks and draw from ERP-informed principles to support their work with clients.

Client Matching: Because therapist backgrounds, learning interests, and clinical approaches vary across our practice, we encourage you to view our team profiles or connect with our intake team to find a practitioner whose approach aligns with your goals.
